Generations Together
Sometimes the family portrait we most want is one that could never have been photographed.
The Genovese family of Hoboken, New Jersey, had lost the mother’s parents about five years earlier. As their own children grew, the family increasingly wished for something they could no longer arrange in real life: a portrait of the generations together.
There was no photograph containing everyone.
I had a photograph of the living family and separate reference photographs of the grandmother and grandfather. From those pieces, I could begin constructing the family image they wished existed.
But the people were only part of the story. The grandparents’ home had been the center of family life—a place of dinners, celebrations, visits, conversation, and years of ordinary moments that eventually became treasured memories.
So I brought everyone back there.
The finished portrait places the generations together in front of that home, combining photographs taken at different times into one believable family moment.
It is not a reconstruction of an event. It is a portrait of belonging.
Sometimes painting can put a family back in the place where, in memory, they never really left.
