A Presence Still Felt
Sometimes the person we most want beside us is the one who cannot be there.
Suzy lost her mother when she was twenty-five. Ten years later, when Suzy married at thirty-five, the absence was especially profound. Her mother would never see the dress, stand beside her daughter, or share the wedding day she had once imagined.
Suzy asked me whether I could create something that no photograph could provide: a portrait of the two of them together on her wedding day.
I painted Suzy as the bride she had become and placed her mother beside her—not as an ordinary physical figure, but as a softly illuminated presence. She is there and not there at the same time: remembered, loved, and still somehow participating in the moment.
The painting was never intended to suggest that the scene literally occurred. Its purpose was to make visible something Suzy already felt.
Her mother was still part of that day.
Some bonds time cannot break.
